17-Year-Old Volunteers His Time and Experiences to Share the Realities of Caring for a Combat-Injured Parent
Jack, a 17-year-old Californian, found community through caregiving as a Hidden Helper. Because his father — a Marine Corps Veteran — is combat-injured, Jack has taken on extra responsibilities at home to support his dad and family.
“Jack has demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience while caring for his wounded warrior father,” Melissa, Jack’s mother and nominator, said. “He consistently puts others before himself, offering support, patience, and encouragement during difficult moments.”
“At an age when many are still learning how to navigate their own challenges, Jack has shown maturity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family.” - Melissa, Jack's Mother and Nominator
His internal drive to serve and support has led Jack to many opportunities. He’s part of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Helpers Advisory. As a member, he advocates for military families, specifically helping to shape programming that supports caregiving youth. Through the same organization, he attended the Hidden Helpers Summit at Walt Disney World last year, participating in sessions and contributing ideas.
As a Military Family Advisory Network volunteer, Jack shares his experiences as a Hidden Helper for research studies.
“My father served in the Marine Corps, and we are all proud of his service.” - Jack
When he’s not with his family or advocating for Hidden Helpers, Jack enjoys working out and swimming.
“I appreciate the time to myself,” he said. Additionally, he volunteers with the Red Cross. An honor roll student, Jack plans on attending college and studying to become an engineer.
During his father's care for combat-related injuries, Jack received multiple Our Military Kids activity awards to fund driver's education courses. Learn more about the Our Military Kids activity award program at: https://www.ourmilitarykids.org
