North Carolinian Girl Uses ‘Quiet Strength’ to Care for Veteran Father
A 10-year-old from North Carolina, Andie is the youngest member of her family. That’s never stopped her from being a major support for her Veteran father, who experiences combat injuries to include PTSD and TBI from his time serving in the Marine Corps Reserve and Army National Guard.
“Andie deserves recognition for how she’s grown through these challenges without losing her compassion or drive. She’s not just coping; she’s thriving and lifting everyone around her.” - Melody, Andie's Mother and Nominator
Andie has learned how to navigate her father’s challenges and offer alternatives or solutions to issues he faces from day-to-day.
“She steps up with unwavering kindness and understanding, helping me care for him in practical and emotional ways every day,” said Melody, Andie’s mother and nominator. “When [her father’s] symptoms flare, she takes initiative to keep things steady.”
Andie describes her experiences this way: “I’ve learned how to be strong, patient, and help take care of my family. Sometimes that means helping my papa when he’s having a hard day, even if he’s a little grouchy. It also means learning to control my own attitude so I can be kind and helpful.”
Andie has found ways to cope with the limitations her family periodically experiences, especially when it comes to financial pressures stemming from her father’s medical needs.
“This shows incredible strength in handling the uncertainties and sacrifices that come with a parent’s invisible wounds,” Melody said.
Andie leads by example in her community, normalizing the experiences of children who have parents experiencing injuries and mental health struggles. “She leads by showing that it’s okay to talk about these things and that helping others doesn’t mean ignoring your own needs,” said Melody.
“Being a military kid means life is sometimes hard, but also really special.” - Andie
Andie has a wide range of activities she enjoys, including riding her favorite horse, Blaze, at farm school. She also crochets, crafts, participates in American Heritage Girls, and runs. She’s currently training to run a half-marathon with her mother. When she grows up, she wants to care for animals and is interested in becoming a zookeeper.
“I also want to have my own farm one day with mini-Highland cows and other animals,” Andie said. “I think it would be really fun and peaceful.”
