Kinley and Michael, Army Reserve Courageous Kids Contest Winner

Sibling Pair From Indiana Lead Through Father’s Deployment

Leaning on each other and their communities, two siblings from Indiana made the most of their father’s Army Reserve deployment last year. Michael, 14, and Kinley, 12, tried new things, experienced milestones, and continued to be leaders among their peers — all while navigating their dad’s absence.

Described by her mother as a “devoted ‘daddy’s girl,'" Kinley was challenged by the separation, navigating life and trying new things while he was gone. Over the summer, Kinley attended two camps. One was new to her; the other was one she attended before. At both, she flourished, overcoming challenges, building confidence, and growing socially.

Throughout the year, Kinley served in her church’s children’s ministry and attended youth group. She also volunteered multiple times monthly at the local food pantry.

“She stepped into unfamiliar spaces with enthusiasm,” said the siblings’ mother and nominator, Amber. “Her positive spirit and resilience have become increasingly evident to those around her.”

Deployment coincided with a huge milestone for Michael: high school. Faced with challenges that transitions bring, he learned how to navigate and overcome difficulties.

“His ability to grow, persevere, and take accountability reflects his strong character and personal resilience,” said Amber. Michael also served in his church’s children’s ministryjoined youth group, and volunteered regularly at their local food bank.

“Some kids have parents halfway across the country, some kids have parents halfway across the world, but we are all making sacrifices.” - Kinley

Kinley is active in her school’s drama club and orchestra. She loves reading and writing fiction, saying, “Both take me to a whole new dimension with endless possibilities at my fingertips!” In the future, she plans to attend a performing arts college to become an actress.

“You are not the only one struggling. There are others that know what you're dealing with and understand how you feel.” - Michael

Michael is heavily involved in his school’s wrestling team. He enjoys “working with other seasoned wrestlers to enhance my knowledge and skills.” Michael also finds time to learn and perfect card tricks and play basketball for fun. He hopes to join the Army and work in construction.

During their father's Army Reserve deployment, Kinley and Michael each received Our Military Kids activity awards to fund camp and art classes! Learn more about the Our Military Kids activity award program at: https://www.ourmilitarykids.org
