Jocelyn, Air Force Reserve Courageous Kids Contest Winner

High School Senior Serves Her Community While Her Father Serves Abroad

For 18-year-old Jocelyn, senior year has been one of accomplishment and separation. Her father, an Air Force Reservist, deployed last year. Despite difficult circumstances, Jocelyn poured her time and talent into her school and community.

“She has showed others around her that you can continue to move forward and push through difficult situations out of your control,” said Jennifer, her mother and nominator.

An honor roll student, Jocelyn is a leader who does not shrink from challenges, whether she is volunteering in a grisly reenactment to illustrate the dangers of drunk driving or working her part-time job at an assisted living facility.

Jocelyn is also a firefighter, volunteering with her local department. My favorite part of being a firefighter is helping the community and the brother-and-sisterhood that comes along with it,” she said. Having earned her official black helmet, she also spent a significant amount of time honing her emergency response skills through trainings and has earned her interior certifications.

“She has run calls next to her dad and honored him during his deployment by being present, taking initiative and continuing to for serve the community.” - Jennifer, Jocelyn's Mother and Nominator

Jocelyn has tackled barriers and obstacles as an athlete and volunteer in typically male-dominated activities. She has played in multiple baseball leagues and toured with her flag football team, serving as a role model for younger girls.

Jocelyn has dealt with discrimination in male-dominated sports, defying odds and breaking the glass ceiling. She tells her story with integrity, overcame injury, and the rest is history,” said her mother.

“Being a military kid helps to develop unique skills like flexibility, independence, and a deep appreciation for service and community.” - Jocelyn

Jocelyn has spent all four years of her high school career studying metal technology. After graduation, Jocelyn will continue her welding technology education and earn her certifications. She also plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Throughout their father's multiple Air Force Reserve deployments, Jocelyn and her brother Jameson each received Our Military Kids activity awards to cover sports conditioning, basketball, baseball, and Scout camp.
