High School Senior Cares for Brother During Cancer Fight and Father’s Deployment

Gabriella Grace — “Gabby” for short — was hit with a double-whammy. Not only was her father deployed overseas with the Army Reserve, her younger brother was diagnosed with cancer. For any family, a cancer diagnosis is devastating. For a family already experiencing the absence of a parent, there’s a new level of challenge and difficulty.

Gabby dug in, staying in the hospital with her brother for six months, helping with his daily care, and providing emotional stability for her mother.

“Gabby was the rock that held her family together during this difficult time,” said her mother and nominator, Lisa. “Through the challenges our family faced during her brother’s illness, Gabby continued to support those around her while maintaining her commitment to helping others in her community.”

“She consistently sets the example of what it means to be a caring big sister, teammate, and friend.” - Lisa, Gabriella Grace's Mother and Nominator

Additionally, Gabby has volunteered 400 hours at a camp for people with special needs. It’s a cause near and dear to her because her brother has Down Syndrome.

“Gabby demonstrates patience, kindness, and responsibility well beyond her age,” said her mother.

“My favorite part of being a military kid is the opportunities that have come from it.” - Gabriella Grace

After school, Gabby participates in theater and dance. “I love these activities because they allow me to interact with creative people while working together to tell a story,” she said. She plans on pursuing that passion by majoring in theater and acting in college.

During this time, Gabby's brother Niccolo has received multiple Our Military Kids activity awards to pay for camp and dance classes. Learn more about the Our Military Kids activity award program at: https://www.ourmilitarykids.org
