Justin, National Guard Veteran Courageous Kids Contest Winner
For this 18-year-old from Pennsylvania, service to family and community runs deep.
Courageous. Resilient. Responsible. Selfless. That’s how Justin, this year’s Courageous Kids Contest winner for the National Guard Veteran division, is described by his nominator and dad, Jason.
When Jason was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment, Justin was there for his family. He met the moment by taking on extra responsibilities, staying upbeat, focused, and centered.
“Despite the challenges of seeing a parent face a serious illness, Justin stepped up in ways that were both selfless and inspiring, showing maturity far beyond his years,” said Jason, a Veteran of the National Guard. “His quiet strength gave me the peace of mind I needed to focus on my recovery.”
“Justin’s actions during my cancer treatment reflect the qualities of a courageous kid — someone who rises above challenges with kindness, strength, and unwavering support for their family. He is not only my son but also my hero, and I am incredibly proud of the courage and resilience he displayed during this time.” -Jason, Justin’s Father, an Air National Guard Veteran
Justin’s service and leadership extend throughout his community. He was voted secretary of his chapter of the National Honor Society and selected for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association First Team. In addition to his academic and athletic pursuits, Justin also volunteers with his local VFW. “His willingness to give back to the military community reflects his deep respect for service members and his understanding of the importance of supporting those who have sacrificed for our country,” said Jason, noting that Justin’s example has inspired others to get involved, too.
As an Our Military Kids grant recipient, Justin wrestled during his father’s National Guard deployment seven years ago. It’s a sport that — along with football — has followed him into high school. He also enjoys video games and gardening with his grandparents. When Justin graduates, he plans to pursue a construction management degree at a technical school.
“Being a military kid isn’t just about the challenges — it’s about honoring the dedication, courage, and commitment that runs through my family. It’s a part of my identity, and it’s something I’ll always carry with me.” -Justin
Justin draws strength and purpose from his role as a military kid and his family’s history of military service. “I get to be a part of something bigger than myself, knowing my dad and other family members are serving our country and protecting our freedom,” he said.
He encourages other military kids to find pride in their family’s service as well: “Try to focus on the positives, like the strength you’re building and the unique perspective you gain. Most importantly, remember that you’re not alone—there’s a whole community of military kids who share similar experiences and support each other.”
When his father’s deployed with the Air National Guard in 2019, Justin received an Our Military Kids activity award to fund wrestling. Learn more about the Our Military Kids activity award program at: https://www.ourmilitarykids.org
