Abel, 9, was selected as OMK's Courageous Kids Contest winner in the U.S. Army category! Abel is the child of a U.S. Army Veteran in treatment for combat-related injuries.

"Abel is a genuine soul. He never asks 'how come'; he asks 'how can I help.' At home he helps care for his dad who is a disabled Veteran on continuation of active duty and his mom who served in the Army with an honorable/medical discharge.

Abel has been a sort of backbone in his family when it comes to care and recovery. While his dad received from ankle reconstructive surgery, he was proud to call himself a chef and waiter to help his dad. When his mom is having an episode related to her condition, Abel is quick to bring his mom a blanket or drink to rest.

Abel is told by all of his teachers that he is meant to be a leader. He is always first to raise his hand and stand up for others. During his dad’s treatment, Abel attended a camp for military kids. During the camp, he encouraged a peer who was sad that their parent was as deployed. He took the time to listen and prayed with the peer. He also made sure a grown-up knew what happened and checked on the peer for the remainder of the camp.

While volunteering with USO, he was given the opportunity to eat ahead of others but instead chose to serve others even until the last boxed meal was gone. He also identifies Veterans (whether homeless or in other capacities) and gives what he has to them, every penny of his allowance or a granola bar he may have as a snack."

Q&A with Abel

What are your favorite after-school activities? What do you love about them?
I really like playing outside with my friends. I like getting fresh air, running around, and riding my bike. I have played a lot of sports but currently I’m involved with my Bible Club and BMX. What I like most about them is being with my friends, helping others, and learning new things/ pushing myself.

To you, what does it mean to be a military kid?
It means being a kid of a hero and that’s pretty special.

Do you have any advice to other kids with a Veteran parent?
I think it’s important to be patient and flexible. It’s always good to have a (trusted) grown-up to talk to and friends who understand you.

What do you want to be when you get older?
A marine biologist. I love sea creatures, fishing, science, and being on the water.
