This Invaluable Investment Makes Sports Activities Available for Military Kids like Emeline

For 15-year-old Emeline, a love of golf keeps her connected to coaches, community, and her father throughout his deployment with the U.S. Air Force Reserve. During this time, national nonprofit Our Military Kids has provided activity awards to pay for her golf lessons, giving Emeline the opportunity to pursue the sport both she and her father love without thinking about the cost.

Our Military Kids funds sports like golf lessons for children who are experiencing parent’s National Guard or Reserve deployment or combat-injury care thanks to steadfast support from the Lids Foundation, whose investment this year funded 285 activity awards for children and teens pursuing athletics and sports conditioning, like Emeline.

"Golf has always been more than a game to me - it was the time I shared with my dad before he deployed," said Emeline. "Every round remindes me of the lessons he taught me and keeps us connected, no matter how many miles apat we are. Thanks to the Our Military Kids grant, I can continue playing the game we love together in spirit, and every swing bings me one step close to the day we can tee off side by side again."

The Lids Foundation recently surpassed a cumulative $1.1 million in donations to Our Military Kids, which has resulted in more than 3,000 activity awards to pay for swimming lessons, basketball camp, competitive cheerleading, and many other sports activities since 2013.

“Emeline’s story beautifully illustrates the impact that sports can have on military children during periods of separation and uncertainty,” said Sarah Lim, the Lids Foundation’s Executive Director. “At the Lids Foundation, we are proud to support Our Military Kids in providing opportunities that help young people stay active, build confidence, and maintain meaningful connections with their families. Knowing that these activity awards helped Emeline continue sharing her love of golf with her father throughout his deployment reinforces the importance of investing in military families and the communities that support them.”

According to the Our Military Kids 2026 Program Impact Report, an annual survey of beneficiary families, 88% of participants reported seeing improvement in their children’s physical health and 85% reported a positive impact on their child’s academic performance while participating in their chosen activity. Additionally, 69% of Deployed Program families reported that Our Military Kids-funded activities gave their children something to talk about with their deployed parent, fostering a deeper family connection throughout this time of separation.

“Thank you to Our Military Kids and donors! Your generosity is greatly appreciated,” said Emeline’s mother, Stacey. “Emeline and her dad played golf a lot before he deployed, and by continuing her lessons she was able to connect with him while he was away. And with her high school golf season just around the corner, these lessons will help her prepare!”

This significant impact on overall military family wellbeing would not have been possible without the Lids Foundation’s enduring support for Our Military Kids.
