General Richard “Butch” Neal, USMC (Ret.)
Richard (Butch) Neal serves as a senior fellow for the CAPSTONE Program at the National Defense University and is a Senior Mentor for the U.S. Marine Corps. General Neal’s distinguished 36 year military career was capped by his being selected as the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1996.
Prior to that assignment, he served as the Commanding General of the 2d Marine Division and as the Deputy Commander in Chief/Chief of Staff of the US Central Command. General Neal served as Commanding General on the Joint Task Force for Operation GITMO, a humanitarian relief effort for Haitian migrants at Guantanamo Naval Base, Cuba. During Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, he was the Deputy for Operations at the US Central Command. General Neal’s career included two tours in Vietnam, assignment at the National War College and Director of the Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico.
